It’s not “The Dog Days” but rather “The Denim Days” lately, where every day I go to try to sort through which pair of jeans I will choose to wear. This time of year can feel monotonous, we’re confined to smaller spaces indoors, its dark, and for the sake of getting through the season with a little happiness- we tend to stick to the lane of things that are familiar and comfortable to us. The same goes for getting dressed this time of year; grabbing a sweater and jeans and boots is comfortable and familiar and there is nothing wrong with that! Since we do seem to be huddling in our comfort zones and picking out these same few pieces, I thought it may be a good time to talk about one of the pieces we tend to have the biggest love/hate relationship with: Denim.
Denim, denim, denim….oh how you have hurt us all before-constantly changing, not fitting quite right, sometimes stretching out too much. You have also made many an outfit, and when theres a good match you never want to let go of those “perfect” jeans! We all have somewhat complicated relationships to jeans. I think one of the biggest take aways I have found when personally trying to figure out jeans or helping clients try on jeans is finding something that feels like “you”, but also feels relevant. Wearing jeans is what is popular in our culture, it’s how most of us dress day in and day out! Yet, we are all constantly asking ourselves and others, “are these jeans still in style” “is this length okay” “are these too skinny, too wide, etc..” and are in a constant tizzy about making sure we have THE PERFECT pair of jeans. In the spirit of all of this, I thought I would do a little denim digest for you all.
I could list a bunch of jeans to buy that I’ve tried or have heard are amazing, but at the end of the day the denim that will feel the best on you is the pair that suits your style the best. The pair of jeans that feels good on and is in style and cool for you, can totally transform your every-day wardrobe.
Length:
I would like to say off the bat, that there is no one general rule about length, other than you should absolutely invest in geting alterations to get it *right* , if needed! I love my crop jeans and I love my super long jeans. I think that for each fo us theres a reason to have both. The rule with crop jeans is to do a flat shoe that shoes off that theres no break and you’re going for something almost a little 60’s and kicky. As for the long jeans, that’s the moment to elongate, wear boots or heels or the right sandals to balance of the length and heaviness of a longer jean.
See above for how I styled some extra long jeans I wore on my day off. They’re a long flare style so the square toe heeled boot helped balance out allll of the flare and while I was just trying on the suede jacket, it does help add a little length balance on top too.
Same goes for these TWP jeans I just got! I can’t wait to wear them with this cropped top, but also layering on longer jackets to keep elongating.
